Californication: Rob Lowe excited to reprise Eddie Nero character

When he sat down with me at the Television Critics Association (TCA) 2013 Summer Press Tour to discuss his upcoming NGC film Killing Kennedy, Rob Lowe also touched on some of his other projects, including his return to the hit Showtime comedy Californication. The series, which will air its seventh season on Showtime in 2014, is currently shooting in Los Angeles, and Rob Lowe told me that he has completed the filming of his guest-starring role.

“Yes!” said Lowe excitedly, laughing at the mention of the show and the Eddie Nero character. “I just finished [shooting.].
I LOVE playing Eddie Nero. It’s like … I don’t know how to describe it. It feels like turning a kid loose in a candy store. And we always have to think about … it’s always so outrageous. Like, can we top it, try to make it different? And Tom Kapinos — who’s brilliant, who writes that show — always finds a way to do it, and I think that this Eddie appearance, in what is the last season of Californication, is going to be really cool.”

In terms of the number of appearances Eddie Nero will make, Lowe says, “I think just one. I may do the season finale, I’m not sure, but I usually come back and just do one really good one.”

In the upcoming Californication season, Hank (David Duchovny) will join the writer’s room as his hit film Santa Monica Cop becomes a television series of the same name (with Rob Lowe’s Eddie Nero signing on as guest star). Hank is riled frequently by his boss, the show’s grizzled, old-school executive producer Rick Rath (guest star Michael Imperioli) and his writing team peers, including Goldie (guest star Mary Lynn Rajskub) and Alonzo (guest star Alonzo Bodden). But he’s thrown by the reemergence of old friend Julia (guest star Heather Graham), whose arrival causes chaos in Hank’s already hectic life and with his ongoing relationship with Karen (Natascha McElhone). Meanwhile, Charlie (Evan Handler) and Marcy (Pamela Adlon) are grappling with the aftermath of their reunion and by an enticing offer from her ex-husband, Stu Beggs (guest star Stephen Tobolowsky). Oliver Cooper, Brandon T. Jackson, Roger Howarth and Mercedes Masohn also guest star inCalifornication Season 7.
