About five years ago, actor David Duchovny decided to take up the guitar, as he describes it, just for amusement. But that amusement eventually gave way to full songs that comprise his debut album “Hell or Highwater.” “I felt like I always had words and was always interested in lyrics,” he says. “I wondered how simple they seemed and how profound they became once music was added to them.”
Premiering on Speakeasy is “When the Time Comes,” a song that might resonate with “X-Files” fans, if they’re willing to read into how he describes it. “I like this idea that everything has already occurred – we’re living in this circular time,” he says. “The time has already come – it’s already come and gone. It’s an almost apocalyptic, bleak, but hopeful song.”
If you’re wondering what Duchovny’s album sounds like, “When the Time Comes” is a good example. Throughout the 12 tracks, he mixes his deep voice with country-rock arrangements. Along with making a record, Duchovny’s kept busy over the last several years, starring in Showtime’s “Californication” (which ended last June), NBC’s upcoming ’60s cop drama “Aquarius,” and soon, reprising his role as Fox Mulder in the “X-Files” limited miniseries coming to Fox reportedly at some point in 2016.
Yet with all those endeavors, he swears music has been his most artistic outlet. “It’s the purest thing I’ve ever come out with in my creative life,” he says.
“Hell or Highwater” is out May 12. Listen to “When the Time Comes” below:
