After concluding his seven-season run as Hank Moody on Showtime’s sexy comedy-drama Californication, David Duchovny is returning to network television in NBC’s Aquarius. David will star in the gritty “event series” as Sam Hodiak, a Los Angeles police officer who is in pursuit of cult leader Charles Manson. The historical fiction will take place in the era leading up to the 1960s murder spree masterminded by Charles — played by Game of Thrones‘ Gethin Anthony — and his notorious Helter Skelter sect, the Manson Family.

“It’s about L.A. in the ’60s,” David tells On Air with Ryan Seacrest in-studio on Friday morning. “It’s not just about Manson. It’s really about the world and hopefully you get invested in these characters that we’re making as well.” On top of his involvement in the 13-episode miniseries, the actor is reprising his role as Mulder in FOX’s revival of The X-Files, which originally aired its pilot episode in 1993 before going off the air in 2002. The show, which also marks the return of Gillian Anderson‘s Scully, will reclaim its spot on the network’s lineup this January.
“It was just really waiting for the right time and trying to get everybody together in the same place and time to do it,” he explains of the network and the cast’s decision to revive X-Files. He also gave credit to television’s “change in landscape,” with networks now ordering fewer episodes per season versus the 25-episode-a-year package made in the past. “So we’re doing six episodes of The X-Files, which I never thought would happen,” he adds, before opening up about the revival’s uncertainty of picking up additional episodes. “It’s always, ‘Let’s see what happens.'”
Outside of television, David is also a singer-songwriter who recently-released his debut studio album Hell or Highwater, a 12-song project featuring tunes he penned himself. He tells OAWRS that his guitar skills are “pretty much self-taught,” which has its downside: “The result of that is that I can never play the same way twice. “It all just started about five years ago. I picked up the guitar and I just wanted to really be able to play along with songs that I like in the trailer — just kind of amusing myself,” he continues. “I started looking at songs that I like and I saw that rock ‘n’ roll was pretty basic in terms of chord structure, anyway. I just kind of let people lead me by the hand.”
After X-Files wraps up production in August and before Aquarius begins shooting its yet-to-be-decided second season, David hopes to take his release out on tour. But before he resumes his busy television and music slate, OAWRS producer Tanya Rad gave up her phone to the actor for a game entitled “Text Files,” during which Ryan and Ellen K. read through Tanya’s flirty exchange with three different guys, while David provided commentary on her game. “Hey! I have big thumbs,” Tanya texted to one bachelor who accused her of giving him the wrong number, to which David sarcastically said, “Well, she did better this time because we all know no man can resist a woman with big thumbs.” “I only said that because I didn’t want to admit that I was drunk,” Tanya awkwardly explained. Catch David in Aquarius on Thursday nights at 9/8c on NBC.
