THE X-FILES: COLD CASES THE SHOW'S ACTORS TO ADAPT A COMIC BOOK

David Duchovny came to San Diego Comic-Con to promote a new audiobook, The X-Files: Cold Cases, available now from digital bookseller Audible.

Set soon after the 2008 feature film The X-Files: I Want to Believe, Cold Cases was adapted by Dirk Maggs from the IDW comic book series The X-Files: Season 10, written by Joe Harris. The story begins with Agents Mulder and Scully living together in the witness protection program and under assumed names. Drawn back into their work with the X-Files, they are soon reunited with old friends and foes, including Walter Skinner, Cigarette Smoking Man, and the Lone Gunmen. Although Duchovny was the only actor in attendance, Gillian Anderson, Mitch Pileggi, William B. Davis, Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund and Bruce Harwood all portray their iconic characters for the project.

Duchovny and fellow panelist Maggs both likened Cold Cases to old-time radio dramas like The Shadow" which required the listener to use their imagination to fill in the visual details of what they were listening too. Similarly, Duchovny was also reminded of the early days of shooting the series, when cinematographer John S. Bartley would compensate for the show's then meager effects budget by using low-lighting.

The comic was written with Chris Carter's input and blessing, but before there were any plans to revive The X-Files for television. Although it may not always line-up completely with the television continuity (e.g., the fate of the Lone Gunmen), Maggs and Duchovny both assured the assembled X-Philes that Cold Cases captures the tone of the series and praised Joe Harris for creating a story frightening and compelling enough to be told in this format, with no special effects to fall back on. Duchovny also pointed out that shippers should enjoy the story, as it takes place while Mulder and Scully are still living as man and wife.
It was also announced during the panel that a second audiobook, The X-Files: Stolen Lives, will be released this fall.
